Why Clean Agent for Marine Applications
Water-based suppression is not suitable for engine compartments. Discharging water into an area with hot engines, electrical systems, and fuel creates secondary damage and additional hazards. Clean agent systems suppress fire without displacing oxygen or flooding the space. They discharge within seconds of activation, leave no residue behind, and allow the engine compartment to return to service immediately. Systems are available in automatic, manual, or combined configurations and comply with NFPA 2001. They are accepted by the US Coast Guard and Transport Canada for marine applications.

Sea-Fire - FK-5-1-12 and Novec 1230 Systems
Sea-Fire systems are available to buy in Canada through Control Fire Systems, an authorised Sea-Fire distributor. These systems protect enclosed engine compartments on recreational and light commercial vessels.
Sea-Fire NFG and NFD series use FK-5-1-12 clean agent, which carries zero ozone depletion potential and is USCG approved for enclosed marine compartments. Systems are available for spaces from 25 to 1,500 cubic feet, covering the majority of recreational and light commercial vessel engine rooms.
Systems can be configured for automatic activation only, or automatic with a manual override. Automatic activation occurs when the heat sensor valve reaches the temperature shown on the unit label. Auto/manual systems require a separate manual discharge cable. The FD series includes a factory-installed pressure switch for cylinder pressure supervision, which can also control auxiliary functions such as engine shutdown and air exchange equipment. All cylinders are corrosion-resistant aluminium and ship complete with marine-approved mounting brackets, face plate, and installation manual. Diesel-powered craft are required to install an Engine Shutdown System alongside the suppression unit.
Kidde Marine ECS - Engineered Clean Agent Systems
Kidde Marine ECS systems are designed for larger or more complex marine applications where an engineered, scalable suppression system is required. Two clean agents are available: FK-5-1-12, which has zero ozone depletion potential, leaves no residue, and is safe for electrical and mechanical equipment - the recommended choice for marine engine rooms and machinery spaces; and 3M Novec 1230, which has zero ozone depletion potential, carries the 3M Blue Sky Warranty, and has the lowest global warming potential among available clean agents - suited to high-value equipment rooms and environmentally sensitive applications.
All agents comply with the clean agent definition in NFPA 2001: they are volatile, electrically non-conductive gases that leave no residue, are safe for occupied areas when the system is properly designed, and are environmentally acceptable to the EPA.

Our marine cylinder refilling service covers FK-5-1-12, Novec 1230, FM-200, and Halon 1301 at our Toronto facility. We are Canada's only ULC-listed facility authorised for both first-fill and recharge, and all refills include batch certification documentation. We also carry out hydrostatic cylinder testing at our Transport Canada Approved facility, annual inspection and maintenance of existing marine suppression systems, Halon 1301 reclaim and recycling - Control Fire Systems is the only Halon 1301 recycling centre in Canada - and replacement of cylinders and valves.
