Portable Fire
Extinguishers

Control Fire Systems supplies portable fire extinguishers for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities across Canada. We carry a full range of extinguisher types - from standard ABC dry chemical units to clean agent, CO2, Purple K, wet chemical, and wheeled extinguishers - and provide inspection, maintenance, and hydrostatic testing services for all types we supply.

Choosing the right extinguisher depends on the fire classes present in your facility. Using the wrong type can be ineffective or create additional hazards. Our team can advise on the correct specification for your environment.

Fire Classes and Extinguisher Ratings

Fire extinguishers are rated by the class of fire they are designed to suppress.

Class A covers ordinary combustibles - wood, paper, cloth, and similar materials. The numerical rating indicates the amount of water equivalent the extinguisher holds and the relative size of fire it can suppress.

Class B covers flammable liquids - gasoline, oil, grease, and solvents. The numerical rating indicates the approximate square footage of flammable liquid fire a non-expert operator can expect to suppress.

Class C covers electrically energised fires. There is no numerical rating for Class C - the "C" designation simply confirms the extinguishing agent is non-conductive and safe for use on live electrical equipment.

Class D covers flammable metals - magnesium, titanium, sodium, and similar materials. Class D extinguishers are specific to the metal in question and carry no multi-purpose rating.

Class K covers cooking fires involving vegetable oils, animal fats, and commercial cooking equipment. Wet chemical extinguishers are the standard solution for Class K.

Many extinguishers carry multi-class ratings - ABC, BC, or AB - and will be labelled accordingly. Where a type is not suitable for a particular class, a diagonal line through that class symbol will appear on the label.

Extinguisher Types We Supply

ABC Dry Chemical

ABC dry chemical extinguishers are the most commonly installed type for general commercial and industrial use. They are rated for Class A, B, and C fires and use a dry chemical agent with a compressed non-flammable gas propellant. They are suitable for offices, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and most general-occupancy environments.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

CO2 extinguishers are most effective on Class B and C fires - flammable liquids and energised electrical equipment. The gas is stored as a compressed liquid and expands rapidly on discharge, cooling the surrounding air and displacing oxygen. CO2 extinguishers leave no residue and are well suited to server rooms, electrical rooms, laboratories, and food preparation areas where cleanup after discharge is a concern. Effective range is 3 to 8 feet. Because the fire can re-ignite after the gas disperses, continued application is recommended until the source of ignition is confirmed to be eliminated.

Halotron Clean Agent

Halotron is a clean agent extinguisher with low environmental impact and zero ozone depletion potential. It leaves no residue and is safe for sensitive electrical equipment, electronics, and occupied spaces. Halotron is widely used in data centres, telecommunications rooms, aircraft ground support, and marine applications.

Novec 1230 Wheeled Extinguisher

Novec 1230 wheeled extinguishers provide clean agent suppression in a high-capacity mobile unit. Novec 1230 has zero ozone depletion potential, an extremely low global warming potential, and carries the 3M Blue Sky Warranty. Wheeled units are suited to large server rooms, control rooms, and high-value equipment areas where a fixed system is not installed.

Stat-X First Responder

The Stat-X First Responder is a compact aerosol-based suppression device designed for rapid deployment in enclosed spaces. It uses condensed aerosol technology to interrupt the chemical chain reaction of a fire without displacing oxygen, making it safe for use in occupied areas. It is particularly suited to electrical enclosures, server racks, vehicle engine compartments, and other confined spaces where conventional extinguishers cannot easily reach.

Purple K

Purple K extinguishers use potassium bicarbonate dry chemical and are rated for Class B and C fires. Purple K is one of the most effective agents available for suppressing flammable liquid fires and is widely specified for aircraft hangars, refineries, fuel storage areas, and other high-risk flammable liquid environments.

Wet Chemical

Wet chemical extinguishers are designed for Class K fires involving cooking oils and animal fats at high temperatures. The agent reacts with burning oil to form a soapy foam layer that seals the surface and prevents re-ignition. Wet chemical units are the required type for commercial kitchens, restaurant cooking equipment, and food processing facilities under NFPA 17A.

Water Mist

Water mist extinguishers produce a fine spray of deionised water that cools the fire and reduces oxygen concentration without conductivity risk. They are suitable for Class A and Class C fires and are used in healthcare facilities, heritage buildings, and environments where dry chemical or CO2 discharge would cause damage or pose a safety concern.

Water and Foam

Water and foam extinguishers are effective on Class A and Class B fires. The foam agent smothers flammable liquid fires by separating the fuel from the oxygen supply. These units are suited to garages, workshops, and multi-risk environments with both ordinary combustible and flammable liquid hazards.

Wheeled Units

Wheeled extinguishers are high-capacity units mounted on a cart for mobility. They are available in dry chemical, CO2, clean agent, and foam configurations and are used where a large agent capacity is required but a fixed suppression system is not installed - including aircraft hangars, loading docks, industrial facilities, and outdoor storage areas.

Extinguisher Brackets and Mounting Hardware

We supply a full range of mounting brackets and installation hardware for all extinguisher types we carry.

Inspection, Maintenance, and Hydrostatic Testing

All portable fire extinguishers require annual inspection and maintenance under NFPA 10 and applicable provincial regulations. Control Fire Systems provides full inspection and maintenance services for commercial and industrial facilities in Toronto and across Canada, including annual inspection, 6-year maintenance, hydrostatic testing at our Transport Canada Approved facility, and replacement or recharge where required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fire extinguisher type do I need for my facility?
The correct type depends on the fire classes present in your facility. Most commercial and office environments use ABC dry chemical as the standard unit. Kitchens require wet chemical (Class K). Server rooms and electrical areas typically use CO2 or clean agent. Industrial facilities with flammable liquids may require Purple K. Contact us and we will advise on the right specification.
How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected?
Portable fire extinguishers require a visual inspection monthly, a formal annual inspection and maintenance service, a 6-year internal inspection, and hydrostatic testing every 5 or 12 years depending on the extinguisher type - all per NFPA 10.
Can you service extinguishers we purchased elsewhere?
Yes. We provide inspection and maintenance services for all standard extinguisher types regardless of where they were originally purchased.
Do you supply wheeled extinguishers?
Yes. We carry wheeled units in dry chemical, CO2, clean agent, and foam configurations. Wheeled extinguishers are available in a range of capacities for industrial, aviation, and large-area applications.
What is the difference between Halotron and Novec 1230?
Both are clean agents that leave no residue and are safe for electrical equipment. Halotron is a halocarbon agent with low ozone depletion potential, available in standard portable extinguisher sizes. Novec 1230 has zero ozone depletion potential, an extremely low global warming potential, and carries the 3M Blue Sky Warranty - it is available in wheeled extinguisher format for higher-capacity applications.
