Halon 1301 Recycling Center

Halon gas is a suppression agent that does not leave any residue and quickly suppresses fires, making it a popular choice for museums, data centers, and electronic equipment support. Developed in the 1940s and 50s, it was soon widespread across fire suppression systems, especially when sensitive equipment was involved, due to its effective fire suppression capabilities.

However, halon gas is a Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) whose manufacturing has ceased, due in part to CFC's ability to deplete the Ozone layer and its resulting health effects on humans. Fortunately, there are now more effective, healthier, and environmentally friendly alternatives for modern fire suppression agents.

Health Effects of Halon Gas and Alternatives to Halon

There are two primary forms of Halon gas which were once used for fire suppression systems: Halon 1301 and Halon 1211. Halon 1301 was the most popular choice, because of its efficacy and mild toxicity to humans. However, although the toxicity is listed as mild, consequences can still range from light-headedness to loss of consciousness. Meanwhile, Halon 1211 is much more toxic, and even at low concentrations can lead to death.

Exposure to either variant of Halon gas should be avoided, and if exposure is present, seek fresh air immediately.

Since the discontinuation of Halon production, there have been several alternatives invented that suppress fires more effectively, are considerably less toxic to humans, and do not have environmental effects that are as detrimental.
